Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, is no small feat. With a success rate of only 70-80%, it’s a challenge that demands physical endurance, mental resilience, and determination. For Epsilon’s Steve Popp, who’s been to every continent, the Kilimanjaro trek was still one of the most difficult things he’s ever done. Here’s his story, and why Epsilon’s support made all the difference.
Steve’s adventure began with a 9-day trek up Kilimanjaro, accompanied by four friends, three experienced guides, and 15 porters who carried their equipment. It was a true team effort from the get-go. They camped in comfort – or, as Steve likes to call it, "glamping" – along the way. The journey took them through stunning landscapes, from dense rainforests to alpine deserts, all while ascending the slopes of the dormant volcano.
While the trek itself was grueling, one thing stood out: the motto the guides offered – Pole Pole, which means “go slow and you’ll win.” Due to Kilimanjaro’s high elevation, many climbers struggle with altitude sickness, including nausea, cramping, and fatigue. Every single person in the group had doubts at some point, with the physical toll taking a mental toll as well. But, as Steve discovered during his work at Epsilon as the SVP of Sales Enablement, taking it one step at a time and embracing a steady, methodical approach was the key to success. Much like leading a sales team through complex challenges, he learned that success doesn’t come from rushing forward, but from building momentum incrementally, ensuring everyone stays aligned and focused on the bigger picture.
Steve also packed a special item in his backpack: the Epsilon sign. For someone who has been with the company for 11 years, the gesture felt symbolic. Epsilon has always been supportive of his professional and personal goals, allowing him the time he needed to embark on this monumental challenge. For Steve, carrying the Epsilon sign wasn’t just about representing his workplace—it was a motivating factor. “I can’t let these people down,” he says, referring to the incredible support and camaraderie of the team he works with. Our core value of Work Together to Win Together echoed in his mind throughout his climb.
Throughout the trek, there was also an element of fun and camaraderie. Each day, after the intense trekking, they took time for a “siesta”—a break to relax, sing, dance, drink tea, and enjoy snacks. It was a reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, it’s important to find joy and connection with those around you.
Whether it's scaling the heights of Kilimanjaro or taking on a tough project at work, the most important thing is to keep moving forward—one step at a time. And for Steve, Epsilon’s support made every step of the climb possible.
